I'm not saying, "Very nice but could you add this feature...?"
I'm just saying, "Very nice!"

I'd tried working with setuptools-scm for a while but I agree with you that the method of using a read-from version file instead of relying on tags is far superior. And, even bigger for my project, PsychoPy, is the fact that setuptools-git-versioning makes it so easy to add custom branch formatters.

I wanted a scheme with:

• release branch version = 2024.1.5post4 labels commits after release
• dev (or any other) branch version = 2024.2.0dev35 labels per-release dev version

I'm not sure that's even possible with setuptools-scm but with setuptools-git-versioning it was easy with these steps:

1. VERSION file for dev branch gets updated when we have a new release to show the version for the next release
2. with a new major release that gets merged to release branch and tagged
3. add a really simple branch formatter to handle the branch name
4. set tag format as below

dev_template = "{tag}.{branch}{ccount}"
dirty_template = "{tag}.{branch}{ccount}.dirty"
branch_formatter = "utils:_branchFormatter"
