<p>EPUB® is the distribution and interchange format standard for digital publications and documents
based on Web Standards. EPUB defines a means of representing, packaging and encoding structured
and semantically enhanced Web content – including XHTML, CSS, SVG, images, and other resources
– for distribution in a single-file format.</p>

<p>EPUB 3.2 is a minor revision of the EPUB 3 specification,
which can be considered as a successor to both EPUB 3.0.1 and EPUB 3.1.
EPUB 3.1 did not receive wide adoption,
and the Community Group decided to create EPUB 3.2
to be strongly backward-compatible with EPUB 3.0.1,
while retaining many of the changes made in EPUB 3.1
(A given version of EPUB is said to be strongly backwards-compatible
with an older version if and only if any EPUB publication conformant
to the older version is also conformant to the newer version).
All valid EPUB 3.0.1 files should also be valid EPUB 3.2 files.</p>

<p>EPUB 3.0.1 is a minor maintenance update to EPUB 3.0. On June 26, 2014 the IDPF announced that the
IDPF membership had overwhelmingly approved elevation of EPUB 3.0.1 to final Recommended Specification
status.</p>
<p>As of as of January, 2017, EPUB 3.0.1 has been superseded by <a href="#epub31">EPUB 3.1</a>, which is now
the current version of the EPUB standard.</p>

<p>EPUB 3 was developed pursuant to a charter approved by the IDPF Membership in May, 2010. EPUB 3.0 was
approved by the IDPF membership as a final Recommended Specification effective October 11, 2011, and
superseded the previous release, <a href="#epub201">EPUB 2.0.1</a>.</p>
<p>As of as of June, 2014, EPUB 3.0 has been superseded by <a href="#epub301">EPUB 3.0.1</a>, which is now
the current version of the EPUB standard.</p>

<p>EPUB 2.0.1 is a maintenance release of EPUB 2. Its development was chartered in 2009, and the final
standard was approved by the IDPF Membership as a Recommended Specification in May, 2010.</p>
<p>EPUB 2.0.1 was superseded by <a href="#epub30">EPUB 3.0</a> in October, 2011. As of June 2014, the
latest released version of EPUB is <a href="#epub301">EPUB 3.0.1</a>. EPUB 2.x is now considered
obsolete and is no longer under active maintenance.</p>
