Rationale: The GAW Team at the Secretariat has noticed that the WMDR contains a large number of atmospheric variables (690), which can be confusing and make it difficult for users without advanced knowledge to identify the variables they observe or select the correct data to download.
Purpose: To establish a set of variables that the GAW Programme can manage (with measurement guidelines, standards, and long-term expertise) and that are easily recognizable by a broad community.
Implementation Plan: 1. Define the variables (ECVs + other GAW key variables). 2. Agree with the respective SAGs the selected variables. 3. Add the TAG 'GAW variable' in the table. 4. Add an extra step with the ECVs classification scheme: GHGs, Precursors, Ozone and Aerosols. Apart UV Radiation is also part of GAW, however the classification should hang from Radiation tree. 5. Apply the same tree to GAWSIS so the public can choose from the main areas (GHGs, Precursors, Ozone and Aerosols + UV Radiation) and also to the full list with 690+ entries. 6. Future implementation in the GAW WDCs.
Sergio presented the proposal - noting that the GAW community is overwhelmed by the options for Atmospheric variables and would like to have a set of them tagged with GAW
Joerg discussed some other options, perhaps separating the tree into core and recommended... needs more thought on how to implement and most of this is outside the work of TT-WIGOSMD
Franziska pointed out that GAWSIS follows same structure of OSCAR/Surface
